The word “Belikin” in the Maya language means “Route to the East” — a term many believe to be the Maya’s eastward expansion towards Belize. “Belikin” is believed by some to be the origin of the name “Belize”. The most accepted derivation comes from the word “Balix”, which means “muddy waters”, a reference to the Belize River.

Old Airport Road

The Old Airport Road in Ladyville, Belize District is a significant roadway that has undergone various transformations throughout its history. The road was originally built to provide access to the old Belize City Municipal Airport (renamed Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport – airport code TZA). The Bowen family founded the Belize Brewing Company, makers of Belikin Beer.

The announcement of the name change was made this month on Belikin Beer’s socials with the caption, “The transformation of Old Airport Road into Belikin Boulevard, one that mirrors our collective growth, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to our unity.”

The Brewery That Shouldn't Be

Belikin Beer is a symbol of resilience that speaks to the spirit of Sir Barry Bowen’s determination to prove “experts”, who said Belize didn’t have the population base to support a brewery, wrong. Collective growth speaks to Belizeans who have supported Belikin from the beginning. Learn more about the history of Belikin Beer here.
